Is it possible to switch branches of military while in DEP?

Hello everyone, I'm currently a junior that's interested in the military after high school. I'm considering enlisting in the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) but still not sure about the exact branch. Can anyone share if I join a branch's DEP, could I switch to a different branch? Thanks a lot!

Yes, it is technically possible to switch branches after enlisting in the Delayed Entry Program (DEP), but it can be a complex process. In order to switch branches while in the DEP, you would first need to obtain a DEP discharge from the branch you initially enlisted in. Keep in mind that the DEP is a legally binding agreement, so you would need a valid reason to request a release.

If approved, you could then enlist in a different branch. However, you might need to meet additional requirements or complete additional forms for this other branch. Each branch has its own requirements and enrollment process. There could also be differences in how each branch runs its DEP. Furthermore, some branches might not accept DEP discharges from other branches, or they might require a waiting period.

Please note that this process could delay your training and shipping date. Another thing to consider is that branch transferring could lead to a possible re-evaluation of any sign-on bonuses or benefits that you might lose from the first branch.

Given these complications, you might want to take a bit more time to consider which branch aligns most with your career goals and personal aspirations before enlisting in the DEP. Research on the specific commitments, training, lifestyle, and career opportunities each branch offers could be beneficial in making this decision. It wouldn't hurt to also take into account things such as the branch's mission, the opportunities for growth and advancement, and the various roles that exist within the service. All things considered, the decision is a personal one and should align with your long-term goals.
