The role of Military Police in the U.S. Army

The Military Police, usually called MPs, play a significant and diverse role in the U.S. Army. In essence, they are responsible for maintaining law and order and ensuring the security of both the military community and the operational environment.

MPs typically handle various tasks that can be broken down into five main functions: law & order, area security, prisoner of war operations, mobility support, and police intelligence operations.

Law & Order: In this role, MPs perform duties equivalent to civilian police. This involves everything from traffic control and combating criminal activity, to helping to maintain morale, discipline, and standards within the army by preventing and investigating offenses.

Area Security: This involves protecting critical facilities and resources from sabotage and damage, as well as controlling movement and maintaining order in military areas and installations.

Prisoner of War Operations: In times of combat, MPs are responsible for handling enemy prisoners of war and other detainees. This includes processing, securing, and transporting these detainees in compliance with international law.

Mobility Support: This function relates to ensuring the efficient movement of Army units, often managing route reconnaissance and route marking.

Police Intelligence Operations: MPs can be tasked with collecting, analyzing, and disseminating data pertinent to military command's decision-making process, especially regarding potential threats.

As for career progression, you would start as a Private (E1) after completing basic training and advance through the ranks as you gain experience and complete leadership training. Promotions are based on a combination of your time in service, military performance, and additional professional development such as advanced MP courses. As you rank up, you will take on more leadership and responsibility within your MP unit.

Military police can also pursue specialized roles such as a K9 handler, special reaction team member, or criminal investigations special agent. These all require additional training but can make for a diverse and interesting career in the army.
