How crucial is having a calculator for the PSAT?

Hey everyone! I'm gearing up to take the PSAT soon and I was wondering, how crucial is it to have a calculator for the math section? I'm pretty comfortable with math, but I'm not sure if the PSAT is designed with the assumption that everyone will use a calculator. Would it be a big disadvantage if I went in without one?

Hi there! It's great to hear that you're feeling confident about your math skills. To answer your question, while it isn't absolutely necessary to use a calculator on the PSAT, having a calculator can definitely save you time and may reduce the risk of simple arithmetic errors, especially on more complex problems or those with tedious calculations.

It is important to note that there is a section of the math test where calculator use is actually prohibited, so you'll want to make sure your mental math skills are sharp for that part—it sounds like you're already in great shape there!

Ultimately, whether or not to use a calculator depends on your personal comfort level and your strategy for taking standardized tests. That being said, sometimes people get unexpected brain freeze during standardized tests, so I'd recommend bringing your calculator even if it's mainly just there in case of emergency—there's no harm to taking it and not ending up needing it! If you decide to use one, make sure it's a type that is permitted by the PSAT and that you're familiar with how to use it efficiently, to make sure this strategy of using it for stress relief doesn't backfire.

Best of luck on your PSAT!
