How acceptable is it to explore personal hardship in my college essay?

So, I've been going through my essay topics and I've got this really personal story about overcoming hardship. It's a big part of who I am, but I'm a bit worried it might come off as too sad or heavy for a college essay. Has anyone here written about something similar and willing to share their experience? I want to be genuine, but I also don't want to make the admissions officers feel down.

Absolutely, sharing a personal story of overcoming hardship can be a very powerful topic for a college essay. It's alright if the topic is heavy, as long as it's handled thoughtfully and conveys hope or resilience rather than just sadness. The key is to focus on how the experience shaped you, what you learned from it, and how it's contributed to your personal growth. Admissions officers are looking to understand who you are beyond your grades and test scores, and facing obstacles is a significant part of life. Just be sure to end on a note that uplifts and leaves an impression of your strengths and potential.
