Understanding the Structure of the Government and the Military

Just need some help clarifying this – under which branch of the government does the military fall? I've been looking to join the military after high school and have heard conflicting things about this. I just wanted to make sure I've got my facts right. Thanks in advance, folks!

The United States military falls under the executive branch of the federal government and it is headed by the president, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief. The president has the power to sign into law the policies that govern the military, as well as the authority to order military actions.

Underneath the president, the military is managed by the Secretary of Defense, who is a member of the president’s cabinet. The Secretary of Defense oversees the Department of Defense, which includes all branches of the military.

Speaking of branches, the U.S. military is composed of six branches: the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force. Each branch has a unique mission, but they all work together to protect the security of the United States.

I hope this clarifies your question on the structure of the government and the military! Don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions.
