Hey guys! English major here applying to Cambridge. Wondering, out of all those colleges, which one might offer the smoothest passageway for an English student like me?
While each student's experience can differ, there are a few factors you might consider when determining which Cambridge college might be the "easiest" for studying English. Keep in mind, though, that the key is finding a college that fits you best personally and academically, rather than seeking the path of least resistance.
In terms of academic environment, both Girton and Emmanuel colleges are noted for strong English departments. Girton is known for a strong emphasis on English, with a close-knit community of English students. Emmanuel College has a history of excelling in arts subjects, including English, and offers a supportive atmosphere for English majors.
However, the 'pool' system at Oxford and Cambridge means that if you're qualified to study English and there are no places left at the college you’ve applied to, you can be considered by other colleges. This is an automatic process, and if the admissions team thinks you’re a strong candidate, they’d likely make you an offer, regardless of the college you end up at.
Do note that competition at all colleges is quite high, so focus on your application quality, having good predicted grades, and a convincing interview. Try visiting the colleges (or viewing them online if travel isn't possible) and making a choice based on where you feel most comfortable. After all, this is where you'll be living and studying for the duration of your course. Good luck!
