Details about the newly established Space branch in the military?

I'm really into space stuff, so I was pumped to hear about a new military branch centered around space exploration. Can anyone explain what this branch does, what their mission is, or how someone could potentially get involved in this field post-high school graduation?

The United States Space Force (USSF) is the newest branch of the Armed Forces, established in December 2019. The purpose of the Space Force is to organize, equip and train forces to protect U.S and allied interests in space. This branch focuses on tasks like tracking space debris, maintaining communication satellites, and monitoring ballistic missile launches. It is crucial to national security, technological advancements, and satellite-based technology.

When it comes to joining the Space Force, right now most of its personnel are transfers from the Air Force, but over time the USSF will start recruiting directly. There are various paths you could take post-high school if you're interested in working in this field.

One path is to enter a military academy or ROTC program while pursuing a relevant college degree, such as Aerospace Engineering or Astronomy, and then seeking to commission as an officer in the Space Force.

Alternatively, you could enlist directly into the Space Force after high school. Enlisted members work in technical and operational roles, supporting the mission of the Space Force, often by operating and maintaining equipment.

Another way could be through civilian roles. These are non-military workers who aid the other branches in completing their missions. The Space Force heavily relies on civilian scientists, engineers, and other professionals.

Lastly, it's worth noting that work in the Space Force can be both exciting and challenging, given the pioneering nature of the field and the complexities of operating in space. Preparation, education, and passion for space and technology will be keys to success in this branch.
