What is the purpose of each military branch?

What's up everyone, I'm thinking about joining the military after high school. I'm kinda confused on the purpose of each military branch though. Does anyone know what roles each of the U.S. military branches serve? Like, what's the difference between the Army and the Navy in terms of their main responsibilities?

The United States Military is made up of six branches: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force. Each branch has its own set of responsibilities and areas of specialization.

The Army is the oldest branch and has primary responsibility for land-based operations. This includes ground warfare, but also other facets such as engineering, medical support, and communications on the battlefield.

The Navy, as the name implies, is primarily responsible for naval warfare. They protect our nation's waterways, both domestically and abroad. This involves ship-based warfare, but also extends to aviation (naval aviation) and the countering of submarine threats.

The Marines are a part of the Department of the Navy and they serve as the country's rapid-response force. Marines can be deployed quickly to crisis regions and are trained for ground, air, and naval operations. They're often first on the ground in combat situations.

The Air Force, created as a separate branch after World War II, handles aerial warfare and air defense. They provide close air support to ground troops, strategic bombing, and transport or evacuation roles.

The Coast Guard is primarily responsible for the enforcement of maritime law, maritime search and rescue, and the protection of our nation's coastlines and waterways. During peacetime, the Coast Guard operates under the Department of Homeland Security. In times of war, it can be transferred to operate under the Navy.

Lastly, the Space Force, established in 2019, is tasked with space warfare and protecting U.S. military and civilian satellites, as well as dealing with potential threats in space.

Deciding which branch to join depends largely on your personal interests, skills, and the kind of service that appeals to you most.
