Safest Military Branch to Join?

Yo, as graduation looms closer, I find myself veering more towards the military - but safety is quite important to me. I was wondering if anyone knows which military branch might be considered the safest to join?

That's an interesting question, because safety can be somewhat subjective depending on your individual comfort level and perception of risk. Each branch of the United States military carries inherent risks, but it's more a matter of occupation and specific role that defines how "safe" a role might be. The U.S. military consists of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and the Space Force.

From a broad sense, many consider the Air Force or Coast Guard to be 'safer' due to the occupations they typically engage in. The Air Force primarily conducts operations from secure air bases, and the Coast Guard is largely involved in domestic operations like maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, and maritime environmental protection which typically have lesser combat exposure.

However, it should be noted that 'safest' really depends on your role within that branch. Even with branches considered safe overall, certain roles can carry significant risks, like Special Operations in the Air Force or any combat role.

It might be more beneficial for you to think about what you are looking to do in the military (e.g., mechanic, intelligence, computer systems, etc.) and then compare the safety of those roles across different branches. Keep in mind that no matter what branch or role you choose, there will always be inherent risks associated with military service. Discussing your concerns with recruiters from various branches could give you more clarity regarding ‘safety’ based on your interests and aspirations.
