Deciphering the National Guard's role in the military

Hey! I'm examining my post-high school options, and I've looked into the 7 branches of the military. But what really caught my interest is the National Guard. What's their specific role as opposed to the others? Any guidance would be awesome!

The National Guard is a unique component of the U.S. military that serves both community and country. In fact, the Guard responds to domestic emergencies, overseas combat missions, counterdrug efforts, reconstruction missions and more.

Although your mention of seven military branches piqued my interest, let's clarify that there are currently six branches of the U.S. military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force. However, within the Army and Air Force, there are reserve components, namely the Army National Guard and Air Force National Guard.

Army and Air National Guard units are a mix of full-time and part-time soldiers who usually serve one weekend a month and two weeks a year for training. They perform a dual mission - provide to their state and federal government. Federal Activations by the president or the Department of Defense call guardsmen out of their respective states and into the larger military theater under the Department of Defense control.

State Activations, usually requested by a state's governor, can call the Guard into action during local emergencies, like fires, floods, or civil unrest. They can serve in a law enforcement capacity when called upon for this; the active military cannot due to the Posse Comitatus Act.

So the main role that sets the National Guard apart is that they have the mission of acting in a state's interest, often in response to natural disasters or civil unrest, which is not typically a role for active duty personnel.

Just to note, joining the National Guard can be a great way to serve your country and community while gaining benefits such as military experience, career training, and even assistance with education costs. Best of luck with your post-high school plans!
