Do all military branches have different systems of ranks?

Hello everyone, I'm giving serious thought to joining the military after I complete high school. But I'm curious to understand if all of the military branches follow a similar ranks structure or if they're different?

The different branches of the U.S. military have somewhat similar ranks systems but they also contain differences in the nomenclature and insignia. Below, you'll find an overview of these systems in terms of enlisted rates, warrant officer grades, and officer grades.

1. Enlisted ranks: Enlisted servicemembers are those without a commission, consisting of recruits, junior enlisted members, non-commissioned officers (NCOs), and senior non-commissioned officers (SNCOs). The rank names for these designations can vary considerably between branches. For example, an E-5 in the Army is a Sergeant whereas they are referred to as a Petty Officer Second Class in the Navy.

2. Warrant officer grades: Warrant Officers, who are specialists known for their technical expertise, are present in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, but are not utilized by the Air Force or Space Force. Their grades range from Warrant Officer 1 (W-1) to Chief Warrant Officer 5 (W-5).

3. Officer grades: These are individuals who have received a commission from the President of the United States, and they generally serve in leadership roles. Similar to enlisted personnel, the titles for officer grades can vary, i.e., a First Lieutenant (O-2) in the Army, Air Force, or Marines, is referred to as a Lieutenant, Junior Grade (O-2) in the Navy and Coast Guard.

In summary, while all branches of the military have a rank structure, the titles and insignia for these ranks can differ greatly between branches. This complexity is partially due to the varying histories and roles of the different branches.
