Understanding Veterans and the American Flag

Hey all, I've been thinking about the relation of our American flag to veterans. How is the flag typically involved in veteran ceremonies or recognitions? Has it always been this way?

The American flag is indeed a visible and significant aspect of many veteran ceremonies and recognitions. For instance, during military funerals, the American flag is traditionally draped over the casket. At the end of the service, the flag is ceremoniously folded into a triangle to symbolize the tri-cornered hats worn by colonial soldiers in the Revolutionary War. The folded flag is then presented to the deceased veteran's next of kin with a phrase like, "On behalf of the President of the United States, the United States (branch of service), and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one's honorable and faithful service."

Flags flown at half-staff, whether it be at a government building or on Memorial Day until noon, are common ways of honoring fallen veterans. Furthermore, many Veterans Day ceremonies also prominently feature the flag.

Regarding the historical aspect, the flag's symbolism and relationship with veterans has evolved over time. The flag's significance in veteran's ceremonies really became prominent during and after the Civil War, as the flag was seen as a powerful symbol of national unity amidst a period of painful division.

Of course, every veteran's relationship with the flag is personal and cannot be universally defined. Some veterans may see it as a powerful symbol of the ideals they served, while others might see it as a reminder of the complexity and nuances of service. Either way, the flag is an enduring emblem throughout these conversations and recognitions.
