Sheriffs' relation to the Military?

I've got a quick question for you all -- Are sheriffs considered a part of the military or are they disconnected? Been doing some research and I've been getting mixed responses. Thanks!

Sheriffs are not part of the United States military. They're actually part of local law enforcement agencies. It's easy to see why there might be confusion because they can have roles that, on the surface, seem similar to the military or law enforcement on a larger scale. Sheriffs typically operate at the county level, with responsibility for law enforcement in areas that do not have a dedicated police force. Their duties often include things like enforcing local laws, maintaining order, and overseeing local jails.

That said, it's important to note that, on rare occasions, sheriffs and their deputies may interact with military entities, particularly the National Guard, in situations of state emergencies, natural disasters, or civil unrest when directed by the governor of their state in the United States. But even in these situations, they remain separate entities and have different responsibilities.

Just to clarify a related point: while the military does have law enforcement units (like the Army's Military Police or the Navy's Master at Arms), their role is focused on enforcing laws within the military itself, not civilian society at large. So, there is a clear distinction between these organizations despite some possible overlapping duties.
