Best Branch for Mechanical Engineering in Military?

Engineering has always been my thing, specifically mechanical. The military seems like a good fit for me after high school. However, I am unsure which branch would be best suited for someone with an interest in mechanical engineering. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Each branch of the military can provide unique opportunities and experiences for mechanical engineers, so it can depend on what kind of work you're interested in.

The Army Corps of Engineers is one possibility. They do a lot of work in construction and infrastructure, which could be an interesting application of your mechanical engineering skills. They build and maintain everything from bridges to buildings, and you would likely get hands-on experience with a variety of projects.

On the other hand, the Navy employs mechanical engineers to work with nuclear propulsion systems on submarines and aircraft carriers, among other things. The Naval Surface Warfare Centers and the Naval Submarine Warship Engineering Stations hire numerous mechanical engineers to design and improve the Navy's seagoing vessels. This could be of interest if you're attracted to the idea of working with complex, large-scale machinery.

If your interest lies in avionics and aeronautics, the Air Force and Space Force may be good options. The Air Force employs engineers to maintain and improve aircraft, missile systems, and related machinery. Meanwhile, the newly established Space Force has a variety of roles for mechanical engineers associated with the launch, operation, and maintenance of the U.S. military's space-based assets.

Keep in mind that the environment and lifestyle can vary significantly between branches. You should take some time to consider what you're looking for, not only in terms of the engineering work but also in terms of the culture and day-to-day life of each branch. Lastly, remember that it's also possible to serve in a civilian capacity as an engineer for the Department of Defense, which can often provide similar work experiences with a different lifestyle.
