Changing Military Branches While in DEP - Is it possible?

Pretty much what the title says. If someone's already in DEP (Delayed Entry Program) for one branch of the military, can they switch to a different branch?

Switching military branches while in a Delayed Entry Program (DEP) is complex, but it is possible. The DEP is a program where individuals are obligated to a certain military branch and are waiting for their ship out date to boot camp. The complicated part about switching branches when in DEP is that it involves getting a DEP discharge, which might not be straightforward.

It's important to note that you're not actually an active-duty member while in DEP, you're under no legal obligation to serve and you have the right to change your mind. While the branch you're in would prefer that you fulfill the commitment you've made to them, they can't force you to go into service if you decide otherwise.

To switch branches, it's generally recommended to tell your recruiter about your decision and they should help you request the DEP discharge from their branch. The recruiters might try to persuade you to stay, and it's within their right to do so but they can't force you to.

Once you get your DEP discharge, you'll need to go through the enlistment process again with the new branch, which includes talking to a recruiter from that branch and another round of MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station). Be aware that the new branch doesn't have to accept you just because you were accepted into the DEP of another branch. They will evaluate you based on their own criteria and needs.

Also, this process may potentially cause delays in your enlistment, so it's important to bear this in mind. It's always better to figure out which branch you truly want to join before enlisting in DEP to sidestep this process. Always research and/or reach out to people who have experiences in the branches you are considering to gain more understanding about what life is like in those branches.
