Asthma and Military Service: Is it All or Nothing?

Hey guys, I’m considering the military pathway post-high school but I’ve got a bit of a hurdle. I have a mild form of asthma. Does anyone know if this could prevent me from joining any branch of the military or is it assessed on a case-by-case basis? Thanks in advance!

While asthma is indeed taken into consideration when assessing a candidate's medical fitness for military service, it doesn't necessarily mean an automatic disqualification. The way asthma impacts your eligibility largely depends on the severity of your condition and how much it could affect your ability to perform military duties.

The Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB) typically assesses applicants on a case-by-case basis. For instance, they will examine the frequency and severity of your symptoms, the necessity for medication and the dosages, and any limitations on your physical activities.

Current military standards state that individuals with a history of asthma after their 13th birthday are considered disqualified. However, this doesn't always mean it's an automatic rejection. You may be eligible for a waiver depending on the severity of your asthma, when you last had symptoms, and how it has been managed.

Remember, different branches of the military have distinctive standards and policies when dealing with health issues like asthma. It's always a good idea to consult with a military medical professional or recruiter to get the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding these medical standards. They would be the best sources for understanding potential waiver opportunities, next steps, and the full expectations of the medical evaluations. They can guide you through the process and answer any additional questions you may have.

Always be honest about your health conditions throughout the enlistment process. Failing to disclose existing health conditions can lead to consequences down the line, including possible discharge. Being upfront with the necessary information, even if it feels like a hurdle, is crucial to ensure your safety and success in the military.
