Is the PSAT timed similarly to the SAT?

I know the PSAT is shorter than the SAT, but are the sections timed in the same way? I struggle with timing on tests so I'm trying to figure out how to pace myself for the SAT based on my PSAT experience.

It's great that you're thinking ahead about timing strategies for the SAT based on your PSAT experience. The timing for each section is indeed slightly different between the two tests.

On the PSAT, you'll encounter shorter sections and thus less total time for each portion compared to the SAT. Specifically, the Reading section on the PSAT is 60 minutes, whereas on the SAT it's 65 minutes. The Math sections (without and with a calculator) on the PSAT are 25 and 45 minutes respectively, compared to 25 and 55 minutes on the SAT.

However, the pace at which you'll need to work – the amount of time per question – is very similar. This is intentional, as the PSAT is meant to be a practice for the SAT. If you're struggling with timing, consider practicing with SAT-specific practice tests after you've taken the PSAT, as this will give you the most accurate feel for the timing you'll encounter on test day. There are many free resources available for SAT practice tests, and going through these timed sections can help you create a pacing strategy that works best for you. Remember, practice is key, and the more familiar you are with the test format and timing, the more comfortable you'll feel on test day.
