CDC and Military Branch Connection?

Maybe a bit of a weird question, but I've seen some discussions about a connection between the CDC and certain military branches? I'm really interested in public health but also considering a military career for after high school. Can someone clarify this for me or point me to some good resources?

Absolutely, you're on the right track! The U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (USPHS) is a pretty unique entity that combines careers in public health and the military. The USPHS is made up of health professionals, including public health practitioners, who serve in roles that protect, promote, and advance public health and safety. You'll often find these individuals working in places like the CDC.

Being part of the USPHS means you are part of a uniformed service, although it's not exactly the same as a traditional military branch like the Army or Navy. Members can be deployed in public health emergencies, among other duties, much like a traditional military service member. You may wear a uniform, carry a rank (like lieutenant, captain, etc.), and receive benefits comparable to those offered in the traditional military branches.

There's a lot to consider in terms of both commitment and opportunities. It can be a great way to serve and also get invaluable experience in the field of public health, especially if you want to work with populations most in need of public health resources.

I recommend taking a look at the official USPHS website to learn more about their roles and requirements, as well as their Officer's Basic Course which is a prerequisite for all new officers. It might also be helpful to speak with college admission counselors or military recruiters who can provide additional information and guidance on the steps necessary to pursue this unique path.
