What's the National Guard's Role in the 6 Military Branches?

Hi all, as I look into my options post-high school, I've been considering the National Guard among the 6 military branches. What I'm trying to figure out is its role within the broader military composition. Can someone lend me a hand with this? Thanks!

Sure, I'd be glad to help shed some light on this. You're correct that the National Guard stands among the bodies that compose the defence framework of the nation. However, please note that the U.S military consists of six active-duty Service branches and their respective Guard and Reserve components. They include the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard, and as of December 2019, the Space Force. The Army National Guard and Air National Guard are reserve components of their services and operate in part under state authority.

The National Guard's role is somewhat unique compared to the other branches as it serves both state and federal missions. It's under dual control - meaning, the governor of the state controls the Guard unless the president federalizes it.

In terms of state missions, the National Guard provides protection of life, property, and preserves peace, order, and public safety. These missions can include disaster relief and cleaning up after severe weather events, search and rescue, support to civilian law enforcement, and counter-drug operations.

On the federal side, when the National Guard is federalized, it falls under command of the president - who can use it for overseas missions. Many guard units have seen service in Iraq and Afghanistan, for example. However, unlike active duty soldiers who are available for full-time service, Guard members serve part-time.

Also, because of its unique state-federal balance, joining the National Guard can provide different opportunities and benefits compared to the other branches, such as continuing your education or working a civilian job while serving. Remember to consider these factors as you explore your post-high-school options.
