What's the Diversity Like at SDSU?

Hey guys! I'm looking at San Diego State for college and one thing that's really important to me is the level of diversity on campus. Can anyone give me some info on what the student body is like over there? How diverse is it really? Appreciate any insight!

San Diego State University (SDSU) is known for being a racially diverse institution. Based on demographic data, it includes a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds among its student body. According to the most recently available data, for the 2023-24 academic year, students who identify as Hispanic/Latino comprise 41% of the population, followed by 41% of White students, 16% of Asian students, 9% of students identifying as Two or More Races, 4% of Black/African American students, 0.3% of Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students, and 0.2% of American Indian/Alaska Native students.

As a large public university, you'll find students from all walks of life, from different corners of California, throughout the United States, and even many international students. It's important to also understand diversity in terms of majors and academic interests, and SDSU offers a wide range of programs attracting an array of different students.

Keep in mind, however, that diversity isn’t always just about the demographics. It's also about the environment, the culture, and the availability of resources that support students from diverse backgrounds. SDSU has different resource centers, as well as diversity and inclusion initiatives that aim to foster an inclusive community. Some examples are the Cultural Centers, which include the Black Resource Center, The Pride Center (LGBTQ+ resources), the Center for Intercultural Relations, and more.

That being said, the best way to understand the diversity and inclusivity on campus fully is by engaging in conversations with current students, attending events or information sessions hosted by the university, or exploring their official websites or social networks.

Of course, "diverse" can mean different things to different people, so your experience might vary depending on your own background and perspective. The most important factor is whether or not you feel comfortable, welcome, and accepted on campus.
