What's it like at Southern Methodist University?

As a junior who's getting real serious about my college search, I recently came across Southern Methodist University. Seems like a good fit, but I was wondering if anyone has some personal experiences to share, like what the campus climate is, what the students are like, etc.? Thanks!

Southern Methodist University (SMU) provides a comprehensive, rigorous education and is known for its vibrant campus life.

Academically, SMU's Cox School of Business is highly reputable, as well as their Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences. The professors have been reported to be engaging and supportive. Classes are usually small which contributes to an intimate and favorable learning environment. Some students have also mentioned good internship opportunities due to the school's location in Dallas.

As for the campus climate, it's often described as energetic and ambitious. The school is located in upscale Highland Park, a short drive away from downtown Dallas. This provides a blend of suburban tranquility and urban opportunities.

In terms of student life, SMU is home to a diverse group of students. While it was historically seen as a fairly homogeneous, today the student body is becoming increasingly diverse in terms of ethnic backgrounds and geographic origins. Greek life is somewhat prominent on campus, encompassing about one-third of the student population. Yet, many students also engage in a wide range of other clubs and organizations that cater to different interests ranging from debate teams to service clubs.

Sports is also an integral part of student life with its Division I sports teams. Football games, especially, are a big part of campus culture. There's also a wide variety of on-campus facilities like the modern student center and the stunning Fondren library.

That said, like any university, SMU may not be for everyone. Some students have mentioned a somewhat competitive social scene. It's important to visit, if you can, or engage with current students virtually to get a better sense of the place and whether you'd feel comfortable there.

Overall, Southern Methodist University offers a blend of strong academics, an energetic student body, and a host of opportunities to engage in both on and off-campus.
