Insights on workload at colleges in Tennessee?

I'm from Tennessee and looking into staying close to home if possible. I've been checking out some colleges around here, but not sure about the workload. Does anyone have any insights about the workload at colleges in Tennessee? Are there any schools known for being particularly tough or lenient when it comes to academic workloads?

In general, the workload at colleges can greatly depend on the major and specific courses you take, as well as your personal work habits and time management skills. Examining four-year institutions in Tennessee, there are a number of colleges and universities, each with their own reputations and academic rigor.

Starting with Vanderbilt University in Nashville. It's a top private research institution, renowned for its strong programs across disciplines. Many students say the workload is quite challenging given the caliber of the institution, but they also stress that there is a great support network available, from professors to tutoring services.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the flagship public university, is another school to consider. The workload here can vary depending on the major you choose. For instance, engineering or pre-med might be more demanding than some humanities majors. However, students generally find a balance between their coursework, extracurricular activities, and social lives.

Rhodes College and Sewanee: The University of the South, both liberal arts colleges known for their small class size and personalized attention from faculty, also have high academic expectations, but they also provide a lot of support for their students.

Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) and East Tennessee State University (ETSU), both belonging to the Tennessee Board of Regents system, are generally viewed as having a moderate workload. Yet similar to UT Knoxville, it can depend largely on the major and classes you choose.

Keep in mind that while it can be helpful to know the general reputation of these schools, it might be more fruitful to research how students typically fare in the specific program or major you're interested in. Attend open houses, schedule tours, or reach out to the admissions offices to ask specific questions regarding workload. Remember, what one student finds overwhelming, another may find manageable—it often depends on personal work habits, course load, and time management.
