What's the difficulty order for getting into colleges?

Hey, I'm starting to plan out my college applications and I'm having trouble figuring out which colleges to aim for. Is there a way to categorize colleges from easiest to hardest to get into?

That's an excellent question! Colleges are often broken down into four main categories based on acceptance rates.

1. Most Selective: These are schools like Ivy Leagues and Stanford with acceptance rates often under 10%. They have high academic index thresholds and look for students with a "spike", who are highly specialized in a certain field or interest.

2. Highly Selective: They may have acceptance rates between 10-20%. Schools like Vanderbilt and NYU fall into this category. They also require high academic achievement, strong extracurricular activities, and effective essays.

3. Selective: These colleges typically have acceptance rates between 20-50%. They continue to consider academics and extracurricular performance, but the competition isn't as intense. Schools like University of Wisconsin Madison or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo could be classified this way.

4. Less Selective / Open Admission: With acceptance rates often over 50%, these schools aim to be accessible to many students. Community colleges often fall into the open admission category.

Remember that rankings and categories are just one perspective. They don't necessarily mean these schools are better or worse for a student's personal goals or fit. It's important to prioritize finding a school that aligns with your long-term goals, interests, and the environment you feel most comfortable in.
