What's the path of least resistance to secure a sport scholarship?

I'm a junior and varsity rower hoping to possibly capitalize my athletic capabilities in getting a scholarship. Is there some sport that's typically easier to get a scholarship in? Any input would be super appreciated!

No problem, I can definitely shed some light on this! First off, it's essential to realize that scholarships frequently depend on both the distinctiveness of the sport and the level of competition. That said, sports like rowing, fencing, or squash might offer better opportunities as they're less common and hence have less competition.

However, before considering a sport switch, keep in mind that being offered a scholarship in any sport requires commitment, skill, and a high level of performance. Coaches are looking for athletes who can be assets to their teams. It's not solely about picking a 'lesser-known' sport; rather, it's about demonstrating the sort of dedication, teamwork, and leadership that coaches at the college level are seeking. This can be more challenging if you're new to the sport.

While the NCAA limits the number of scholarships that Division I and II schools can offer, some sports, like rowing for women, are known as "head-count" sports, which means they're offered a certain number of full scholarships. Other sports, known as "equivalency" sports, split a specific amount of aid among a greater number of athletes.

My advice to you would be to concentrate on improving your performance in rowing, since it's a sport you're already familiar with and in which you hold varsity status. Reach out to college coaches with a robust athletic profile, highlighting your academic accomplishments, athletic stats, and extracurricular involvement. Including a video showcasing your technique and performance can also be advantageous.

One additional tip: make sure to keep your grades up! Many athletic scholarships have academic requirements, so having a strong academic record can be just as important as your athletic performance.

Finally, utilize resources like CollegeVine, which can provide you with more knowledge on how to effectively communicate with college coaches and make the most out of your athletic capabilities. Good luck on your journey!
