Easiest Majors for Returning to College

I'm an adult learner thinking about going back to college, and it's been a while since I was last in school. What are some of the easiest majors for someone returning to college?

It's a popular misconception that some majors are categorically "easier" than others. The perceived difficulty of a major often depends on an individual's strengths, interests, and past experiences. That said, there are courses of study which may present less of a learning curve if you've been away from academia for a while.

1. Psychology: This is an intriguing field that studies human behavior and mental processes. It can be easier to grasp since much of the content is based in observing and understanding people.

2. English or Communications: Both of these majors focus on reading and writing skills, which are quite universal. While the reading list might be intensive, if you're an avid reader or comfortable with writing, these could be a good fit.

3. Sociology: Sociology explores human society and social behavior, often relying more on reading comprehension and critical thinking than on rote memorization or complex problem-solving.

4. Education: Majors in education, whether early childhood, elementary, or secondary, can be less technically demanding and, for many, satisfying because of the direct impact seen in educating others.

However, the key determinant of success in a major is not necessarily how "easy" it is, but how interested you are in the material. Engaged learners typically find the work more enjoyable and less challenging. Ask yourself what you're passionate about and allow that to guide your decision. Research the coursework, faculty, and career outcomes for programs you're considering, and don't hesitate to reach out to colleges with questions. Good luck on your journey back to school!
