University of Glasgow Starter Courses?

I'm excited to start at the University of Glasgow this fall! As an international student though, I'm a bit apprehensive about the academic demands. Are there recommended easier classes that could provide a smoother transition for me? I'm leaning towards English but any insight is appreciated!

Congratulations on starting your studies at the University of Glasgow! Diving into a new academic system can be a bit daunting, but don't worry, there are a few ways you can transition smoothly. These usually involve a mix of choosing the right courses and adopting effective learning strategies.

Since you're leaning towards English, the School of Critical Studies offers an introductory course: "English Literature 1A: The Beginnings of English Literature". It is one of the first-year courses (level 1 courses in the Scottish system), specifically meant for students just starting university. The good news is that, although it offers an academic challenge appropriate for university-level study, the class emphasizes support for students transitioning from school to university, teaching essential skills for academic writing and critical thinking.

Additionally, they have "Academic Writing Skills Programme" which is designed for all undergraduate students who are new to the university. This course will help you understand what is expected in terms of writing at the university level.

If you're open to options outside English, consider the course, "Making the Most of your Degree" by the School of Interdisciplinary Studies. This course helps students smoothly transition into university academically and personally, with a focus on developing academic skills, exploring your career aspirations, and promoting overall wellbeing.

While easier courses assist in transitioning, remember that developing good study habits and building a network of support (like reaching out to academic advisors or joining study groups) can also be critical to success at university. Plus, keep in mind that 'easier' is relative and the best courses for you also align with your interests and career goals.

Wishing you every success in your upcoming academic adventure!
