Need advice on selecting a foreign language to study in college

Hey guys, I'm currently trying to decide my college courses and wondering which foreign language courses are considered the 'easiest'. I'd love to learn a new language, but I'd also like to manage my workload. So, anyone with experience, could you share which foreign language you found to be the easiest and why?

While it's not recommended to choose a college course solely based on its difficulty level, I totally get your concerns about managing your workload. The 'easiest' foreign language for you is going to greatly depend on your native language, previous language experience, and natural aptitude for languages.

That being said, many English speakers find Spanish and Italian to be relatively approachable because of their similar alphabets, familiar vocabulary (English has many Latin-based words), and comparatively straightforward grammar rules.

Goods news is, all languages have their tricky bits and easy bits. For example, while German grammar is quite complex, it's a germanic language (like English) and thus many of its words might seem familiar. Similarly, while Mandarin Chinese is tonal (meaning tone changes can change word meanings) and its writing system does not make use of an alphabet, it has relatively simpler grammar.

A different approach is to consider how the language will be useful for you in the long run in terms of your career plans or personal interests. If you're particularly interested in business, for instance, Mandarin or Spanish could open up vast markets. On the other hand, knowing French or Italian could enhance your appreciation of literature or art if those are your interests.

The key is to align your choice with your interests and goals, because your motivation to learn will play a huge role in determining your success in the language. It's also worth noting that the resources and support offered by the specific language department at your college can make a big difference.

Happy course choosing, and good luck with your studies!
