Dreaming of Columbia University

Columbia University is my dream school but I'm scared stiff about applying because of their crazy low admission rate. Does anyone have advice on the best strategies to improve my chances, and what's the easiest way to get into Columbia University?

First off, remember that there's no easy way or "secret" to getting into a school like Columbia University. Columbia is an extremely selective school, and even the most qualified candidates can face rejection due to the competitive nature of the process. That said, there are several things you can do to present the best version of your candidacy.

1. Academics: Academic excellence is a must. Columbia wants students who will excel academically and contribute to the intellectual life of the campus. Make sure you have a high GPA and strong coursework that demonstrates intellectual curiosity and a willingness to take on challenges. Thought Columbia does not require standardized test scores for the 2024-2025 application cycle, aiming for the top of the school's test score range can help your chances. The middle 50% SAT score range is 1500-1560 and the middle 50% ACT score range is 34-35.

2. Extracurriculars: Columbia is not just interested in students who perform well academically, but also in students who will contribute to the campus community. Be deeply involved in 2-4 extracurricular activities—preferably at the Tier 1 or Tier 2 level—and aim to show leadership, dedication, and impact.

3. Personal Statement: In your essay, give the admissions committee an insight into who you are beyond your grades and test scores. Write honestly and deeply about your experiences, values and dreams. Make your passions shine.

4. Columbia-Specific Supplement: The "Why Columbia" essay is a critical part of your application. Here, you'll need to demonstrate your knowledge of and enthusiasm for the specific programs, traditions, and opportunities at Columbia that align with your academic and personal interests. Be specific and show you've done your research.

5. Recommendations: Secure strong letters of recommendation from teachers who can speak to your intellectual curiosity, leadership, and impact within the classroom. A glowing recommendation can really boost your application.

6. Applying Early Decision: If Columbia is undoubtedly your top choice, consider applying via Early Decision. By doing so, you're letting the college know that they are your top choice and, if admitted, you're committed to attending. Historically, the Early Decision acceptance rate at Columbia has been higher than the Regular Decision acceptance rate.

But also remember that while aiming for Columbia is a great goal, make sure to apply to a balanced list of colleges including match and safety schools too. Best of luck!
