Understanding Citadel College's Association with the Military

Okay, bear with me here. I've heard Citadel College has strong ties to the military but I'm a bit confused. Does it mean they're affiliated to a certain military branch? Any clarity would be appreciated.

Citadel College, also known as The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, is not formally tied to a specific branch of the U.S. military, but it is one of the United States' six senior military colleges. This status indicates a unique hybrid of civilian education and military regimentation.

A key feature of The Citadel is its Corps of Cadets undergraduate program, where students are referred to as cadets and live in a military-style environment. While traditional academic programs of study are offered, all students must participate in Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) programs, regardless of whether they intend to commission in the military after graduation.

The ROTC programs at The Citadel cover all branches of the U.S. military: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. This gives cadets a wide range of choices for commissioning into military service upon graduation if they wish to take this path. However, there is no obligation to enter military service unless a student has accepted an ROTC scholarship, which does come with a service commitment after graduation.

Put simply, The Citadel provides a robust military-style education that’s adaptable to a myriad of career paths post-graduation. Its graduates are found in all walks of life, ranging from military service to corporate leadership to public service.
