What's up with United States Space Force?

So, I've heard about the newest branch of the US military: the Space Force. Is any high school graduate eligible to join, or are there specific qualifications needed? Also curious what kind of career paths one can follow in the Space Force. Like, is it more about technical skills or do they also have combat roles?

The United States Space Force, established in 2019 and currently the sixth branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, is primarily dedicated to space operations. These operations include everything from missile warning and satellite control to the development of space strategy, doctrine, and tactics.

As for eligibility to join, similar to the other military branches, high school graduates are eligible. However, certain factors, like your age, citizenship status, and physical health, can influence your eligibility. There are also moral and character standards, as determined by a thorough background check. Lastly, similar to other military branches, you would need to pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test.

Regarding the types of careers in the Space Force, much like the other branches of the military, the opportunities are quite broad. They range from roles that require highly technical skills like satellite operations, cyber operations, and intelligence to those focused on support staff or logistical roles. They have roles such as Operations Intelligence, Cyber Systems Operations, and Space Systems Operations, to name a few. While there is a wide variety of roles, traditionally understood combat roles (ground combat, for instance) are not a part of the Space Force's mission. The focus is much more on protecting space-based assets and infrastructure, and ensure uninterrupted functioning of communications and navigation systems crucial to defense and civilian needs.

This is a relatively young branch of the military, and thus it's an exciting time to join with new roles and opportunities likely to develop in the upcoming years. This could provide unique opportunities for those interested in a military career with a strong focus on space and technology.
