Overlap in Military Branches Rankings?

Hey guys, I'm researching military branches, and it's a bit confusing. Can anyone clarify if ranks overlap in the different branches of the military? If so, how does that work? Thanks so much!

Absolutely, happy to clarify! Indeed, military ranks do overlap among the six branches of U.S. military - the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force. However, it's essential to understand that while there is similarity or overlap, each branch has its own distinct rank structure and insignia.

For instance, an officer with the rank of 'Captain' in the Army, Air Force, or Marines would equate to a 'Lieutenant' in the Navy. Conversely, a 'Captain' in the Navy maps to a 'Colonel' in the Army, Air Force, and Marines. It's essentially the same rank in terms of authority and responsibility, but the labeling system differs.

However, these ranks align more closely at the general or flag officer level. A one-star General or Rear Admiral (Lower Half), two-star Major General or Rear Admiral, three-star Lieutenant General or Vice Admiral, and four-star General or Admiral are roughly equivalent in terms of authority and responsibility across all branches.

My advice would be to review each branch's chain of command and rank structure individually and cross-reference for any overlaps. Moreover, when dealing with personnel from different branches, keep in mind the correspondence. This will help to appropriately address and interact with staff and officers, regardless of their originating branch.
