Understanding VMI's Military Affiliation

Hey folks, do any of you know the specifics about which branch of the military the Virginia Military Institute is connected to? I understand there might be multiple connections, so I'm mostly interested in the main ones.

Virginia Military Institute, often referred to as VMI, is indeed a collegiate institution with a strong military connection. What sets VMI apart though is the fact that it does not affiliate with just one particular branch of United States military, but offers programs leading to commissioning opportunities in all six branches, namely the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Space Force.

VMI structures its Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) programs to cover these branches. Cadets have the opportunity to commission as officers in any of these branches upon graduation should they choose to pursue the ROTC track. It's important to note that while participation in ROTC is compulsory, commissioning is optional, providing flexibility for students to opt for a military career or a civilian one post-graduation.

In essence, while VMI's ethos and training environment are deeply grounded in military tradition, it isn't tied to a specific branch, allowing students to explore a range of military paths.
