Need help understanding competitive admissions in California colleges

I'm from California and seriously considering staying in-state for college. Could anyone enlighten me on which university is notoriously the hardest to get admitted into here? And why is it so competitive? Any thoughts?

In California, the most competitive university by acceptance rate is currently Stanford University, which consistently ranks among the most selective institutions in the nation.
