What are the Hardest Words You've Come Across in College?

So, I was given a heads up that college readings can sometimes have really complicated vocabulary. What are some challenging words you've encountered in your college studies? I'm trying to improve my vocabulary before I even get there.

One of the beauties of college is that you'll undoubtedly encounter an array of new, challenging vocabulary. It's important to remember that the complexity of the words can vary greatly depending on your major and the types of classes you're taking. If you're studying literature, you might come across words like "solipsism," a concept where only one's own mind is sure to exist, or "verisimilitude," the appearance of being true or real.

In scientific subjects, you might come across terms such as "deoxyribonucleic," as in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), or "axon," which is a part of a neuron that transmits impulses away from the cell body. In philosophy, there's "existentialism," a philosophical theory emphasizing the individual's unique position as a self-determining agent. On the business spectrum, words such as "mergers and acquisitions," "quantitative analysis," or "macroeconomics" can be new territory for some.

Immersing yourself in the vocabulary of your chosen field ahead of time could be helpful, but don't be daunted: colleges expect that you'll learn these terms over the course of your studies. To prepare, focus on reading widely and paying attention to unfamiliar language; context often provides clues to meaning. And never be afraid to look up words you don't know - it's a great way to expand your vocabulary!
