Considering a Career as Military Police in the Army

I've been considering different career paths the army offers and the role of military police caught my interest. Could anyone provide me with an idea of what it's like? Morale? Training? Advancement opportunities?

The Military Police (MP) in the Army play a very pivotal role, being responsible for enforcing laws and regulations on Army installations and ensuring the security of resources. As an MP, you're not just patrolling Army bases but also providing support to communities around the world during times of crisis, such as natural disasters.

Regarding training, after you complete the ten weeks of Basic Combat Training (BCT), you would attend Military Police school for 20 weeks. Here, you would learn about civil and military law, self-defense, anti-terrorism tactics, crime scene investigation, apprehension of suspects, and patrol procedures. Keep in mind the physical demands and commitment to strict regulations, as military training can be challenging.

In terms of morale, it largely depends on your mindset and your unit. Some find the job rewarding, particularly those drawn to law enforcement and security. You're often the first respondent to a scene which can be gratifying for many. However, like any military role, the job can be tough at times, and this can affect morale. Ultimately, the camaraderie and sense of purpose often help maintain a generally high morale.

As for career advancement, there are numerous paths you can take. MPs can advance in rank with more experience and further training like any other MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). As your rank increases, you'll take on more responsibilities, lead larger teams, and have increased coordination duties. Some MPs choose to specialize in certain areas such as military working dog handler or Special Reaction Team member. Others might even decide to transition to civilian law enforcement after their service, where their army experience can be highly beneficial.

It's worth noting that while being an MP can be a rewarding and fulfilling career path, it's also essential to do additional research, talk to military recruiters, and potentially individuals already serving in this capacity to ensure it’s the right path for you. Remember, if you decide to enrol, it's a substantial commitment.
