Breakdown of the US military branches

I've been researching a lot lately about potential paths after high school and the US military has piqued my interest. Could someone provide a simple breakdown of each of the branches? I'd like to understand the basic functions and duties.

The United States military is comprehensive and organized into six branches. Each one has varying duties, making each unique in its purpose and operations. Below you will find a simple run-down of each branch.

1. Army: The Army is the oldest and largest branch of the U.S. military, dating back to 1775. It primarily handles land-based operations and is responsible for major combat operations. This includes infantry combat, artillery operations, armored vehicle deployments, and more.

2. Navy: Founded in 1775, the Navy is primarily responsible for warfighting at sea. The U.S. Navy operates globally, with responsibilities ranging from combat to peace-time patrols to ensure international waterways remain free and open.

3. Air Force: Established in 1947, the Air Force focuses on air and space superiority. It carries out strategic bombing missions and engages in air-to-air, and air-to-ground combat. It also handles most of America's strategic nuclear deterrent, including ICBMs and airborne missile platforms.

4. Marine Corps: The Marines, founded in 1775, serve as an all-purpose, rapid response military force for the United States. They are typically first on the ground in combat situations. The Marines are often known for their strong esprit de corps and are seen as being capable of executing a variety of mission types.

5. Coast Guard: The Coast Guard handles maritime law enforcement, maritime emergency response, and maintaining buoys, lights, and other navigational aids. This branch also carries out rescues at sea, enforces environmental regulations, and assists in maintaining U.S. border security.

6. Space Force: The newest branch, founded in 2019, Space Force operates in the space domain to protect U.S. and allied interests. It manages satellites, tracks space debris to prevent collisions, and aims to prevent space-based threats.

While the roles are generally as described, it's crucial to remember that there is crossover between the branches, and their operations can change based on national requirements and evolving threats. Each branch also offers a wide variety of job roles, from combat operations to support roles in fields such as medical, logistics, and administration.
