How do adcoms view double majors for law school applicants?

Hey everyone, I'm a junior right now and considering a double major in political science and philosophy. Would law schools see this as advantageous or is it just going to be seen as academic overload?

Hey there! Law schools are generally looking for candidates who have developed critical thinking, writing, and analytical skills – abilities which both political science and philosophy can provide, so double majoring definitely wouldn't hurt you there. Indeed, they often value the depth and breadth in your academic pursuits as well, and a double major can showcase your intellectual curiosity, ability to think in an interdisciplinary way, and dedication to understanding complex subjects.

Having said that, law schools are also very interested in your GPA and LSAT score. It's important to make sure that a double major does not come at the expense of your academic performance, as this could ultimately be detrimental to your law school applications—a major and a minor, with higher grades, would be preferable to a double major and a lower GPA. Furthermore, double majoring isn't inherently advantageous unless you can clearly articulate in your application how both areas of study have prepared you for law school.

In summary, double-majoring can be looked upon favorably if you maintain a strong academic record and can make a compelling case for how it has prepared you for the rigors of law school. However, don't pursue a double major just for appearances—it should genuinely align with your academic interests and career goals. Good luck with your application!
