Hope you're all doing well. As a junior in high school and an openly LGBT student, I'm keen to know about the level of acceptance in different military branches. Is there a branch that's particularly known for being LGBT-friendly? Supportive environments are a must for me.
While it's important to note that everyone's experiences will differ, all branches of the U.S. military have made significant strides when it comes to LGBTQ+ inclusivity over the past decade. Since the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 2011, people can serve openly, regardless of their sexual orientation in all branches of service. Additionally, as of 2021, transgender individuals can also serve openly in the military, after a previous ban was lifted.
However, according to a poll conducted by Gallup, the Coast Guard was identified as the most LGBTQ+ friendly branch, with the highest percentage of service members identifying as LGBTQ+. It's also worth mentioning that the Coast Guard has consistently positioned itself as being very proactive in its diversity initiatives.
That being said, the Department of Defense (DOD) as a whole actively promotes a culture of respect, and support for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. They created initiatives like the DOD Pride Month, which is celebrated every June with the purpose of recognizing the service of LGBTQ+ individuals.
Remember, it's always a good idea to speak with current members of each branch, if possible, to understand their experiences and perspectives. Consult with different resources too, such as the Modern Military Association of America, an organization dedicated to advocating for inclusive policies within the U.S. military, to get a clearer picture.
