Is There a Sixth Branch of the Military?

Hey, I'm a junior considering my post-high school options. I've been hearing about the 'sixth branch' of the military. I thought there were only five branches - can someone clarify this for me? Thanks!

Yes, there is indeed a sixth branch of the United States military. It's called the Space Force. It was established in December of 2019 as a part of the Department of the Air Force, making it the newest military service branch.

The Space Force was created with the mission to organize, train, and equip military personnel in order to maintain peace and protect U.S. and allied interests in space, as you may be aware, space has become an increasingly important arena for technological and strategic advancement.

Some of the noteworthy tasks under its purview include monitoring ballistic missile launches, tracking space debris, and most crucially, maintaining the functionality and security of satellites that enable vital communication abilities for other military branches.

So, to recap, the six branches of the U.S. military are the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and the Space Force. Each branch plays a unique role in the defense and security of the country, and the addition of the Space Force highlights the emerging importance of space in these efforts.
