Best Military Branch for LGBTQ+ Individuals?

Not exactly sure where else to ask this, but I identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community and I'm thinking about military service post-high school. I'm curious if any military branch is particularly more friendly and supportive towards LGBTQ+ individuals?

The U.S. military made significant strides towards equality for the LGBTQ+ community in recent years, with measures such as the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 2011, and the lifting of the ban on transgender military service in 2021.

Each military branch, namely the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force, have adopted these changes, and all have policies intending to foster inclusivity and support for all service members, including those who identify as LGBTQ+. However, the lived experiences and attitudes found within individual units or commands can vary, as they are often contingent upon the leadership and coordination of those specific groups.

Some military branches have certain initiatives that may convey a greater openness to inclusivity. For instance, the Air Force, Navy, and Army each have diversity programs and dedicated positions that enforce inclusivity policies, such as the Diversity & Inclusion Officers.

In another example, the Naval Academy has a strong group, Spectrum, that supports LGBTQ+ Midshipmen and promotes a positive, diverse, and inclusive military culture. On the other hand, the Coast Guard partners with organizations, like the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, to ensure legal rights protection and support for their LGBTQ+ community.

Still, it's essential to speak with actual service members from the branches you're considering to gain a firsthand perspective. If you're thinking about a specific career field, reach out to someone who is already serving in that role and ask about their experiences and the culture of inclusivity within their command.

Remember that all military branches are governed by the same federal laws and regulations regarding discrimination and harassment, and it will be your own experience, strength, and the relationships you build that will make the most significant impact. All branches should - in theory - be supporting LGBTQ+ individuals equitably, though experiences may vary.
