In India, one of the most competitive institutions to gain admission to is the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The IITs are a group of autonomous public technical universities that are located throughout the country and are considered premier institutes for engineering.
Admission to the IITs is based on performance in the Joint Entrance Examination - Advanced (JEE Advanced), following the two-tier selection process which also involves the JEE Main. Approximately 1.5 million students take the JEE Main each year, and only the top 250,000 scorers are allowed to sit for the JEE Advanced. Of these, only around 10,000 secure a place in one of the IITs.
In terms of acceptance rate, these exams make the IITs extremely selective, with an acceptance rate often less than 1%. These rates vary from year to year and from one IIT to another.
Another competitive college is the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), specifically the one in New Delhi, which is considered India's leading medical research university.
