How demanding is it to gain admission into top engineering colleges in India?

Hey guys, I'm doing some research about universities abroad and I'm curious about the level of competitiveness in engineering programs in India. Which ones are considered the hardest to get into? Are there specific GPAs or entrance exams you need to ace? I'm trying to gauge how tough it'll be to apply, so any insights would be great. Thank you!

Engineering programs in India are indeed highly competitive, with many top institutions consistently ranking among the best globally. The primarily followed undergraduate engineering admission route in India is through entrance examinations, with JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) and BITSAT (Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test) being the most important ones.

To offer some perspective, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and the Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani are widely recognized as some of the hardest to gain admission into. These institutions have extremely competitive admission processes and only a small percentage of applicants are accepted each year.

JEE is conducted in two stages—JEE Main and JEE Advanced. To get into IITs, you need to qualify JEE Main first, and be among the top 2.5 lakh rank holders who then sit for JEE Advanced. Acceptance rates into IITs are often less than 1%, and cutoff ranks vary depending on the specific branch of engineering.

BITS, Pilani has its own entrance examination called BITSAT. Thousands of students compete for limited seats available across three campuses (Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad).

In terms of academic requirements, while GPA matters for basic eligibility (a minimum score of 60-75%, depending on the institution), it is the performance in these highly competitive entrance exams that plays a significant role in determining admissions.

Keep in mind that these exams judge the depth of your understanding of concepts in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, and they are known for their difficulty level. Thorough preparation is key for success in these entrance tests.

In conclusion, while gaining admission into top engineering colleges in India is challenging, it is definitely achievable with focused preparation and consistent hard work. I hope this gives you a general overview. Good luck with your research!
