I'm 100% sure that I want to fly in the military. Before I go talk to a recruiter, I wanted to get an idea of which branch actually has the most flight operations. Does anyone have any insights here? I'm open to any necessary training and would love a heads up about it.
The United States Air Force (USAF) is the branch most commonly associated with aviation and flight operations. It operates the largest and most technologically advanced air fleet in the world, covering a wide range of aircraft from fighters, bombers, and transport aircraft to reconnaissance platforms, drones, and helicopters.
In addition to the USAF, other branches of the military also have their own air components. The Navy has a significant air component, operating from aircraft carriers and focusing on various missions that support naval operations, including surveillance, strike operations, and logistics. The Marine Corps also maintains its own air capability, with an emphasis on supporting ground troops and performing close-air support.
The Army primarily uses aircraft for transport and utility purposes, such as helicopters for troop transport and medical evacuations. However, they do also have Apache helicopters for close air support and attack missions.
If you're set on piloting fixed-wing aircraft (like jets), the Air Force and Navy would be your best options. Piloting rotary-wing aircraft (like helicopters) is more common in the Army.
Remember that each branch comes with its own unique culture, training requirements, and mission focus, so you'll want to consider these factors in your decision as well.
As for training, regardless of the branch you choose, you'll have to go through several stages of training - Basic Training, Officer Candidate School, Initial Flight Training, and finally, advanced flight training in your specific aircraft. It's a demanding but rewarding process! Armed with this knowledge, you're better prepared for your conversation with a recruiter.
