Foreign language requirement for college—2 years enough?

Guys, I’m sorting out my schedule and I’m not sure if I should take a third year of Spanish. Do colleges require only 2 years of a foreign language or should I go for the third year just to be safe?

The requirements for foreign language study can vary depending on the institution. Many colleges recommend a minimum of two years of foreign language study, but competitive schools often like to see three or four years, as it demonstrates sustained interest and true proficiency in the language. If you have room in your schedule and you're applying to some schools that are more selective, I'd advise taking the third year of Spanish.

Not only does that third year enhance your academic profile, but it also hints at contributions you could make to the school as a whole, for example through extracurriculars focused on Latin culture, or through study abroad programs in Spanish-speaking countries.

Moreover, if you are not as strong in other areas of your application, an additional year of language study could help bolster your academic credentials. However, if taking another year of Spanish would impede your ability to thrive in other courses or participate in other activities that are more aligned with your intended college major or career interest, or if it could potentially lower your GPA, it might be better to leave Spanish off your schedule next year.

Figuring out your optimal schedule is a balancing act, and you should consider your overall high school experience and postsecondary goals when making your decision. You could also talk to your Spanish teacher and/or your high school guidance counselor for more personalized advice. Good luck!
