Need insights about Northern Michigan Colleges and Universities

Hello, I'm a rising junior and starting to look at colleges up in Northern Michigan. It's gorgeous and I do love the cold. Does anyone know what kind of colleges and universities there are in that area? Any major highlights or special programs I should be aware of?

Sure, Northern Michigan is indeed a beautiful location for college! A couple of institutions that immediately come to mind are Northern Michigan University (NMU) and Michigan Technological University (MTU).

NMU, located in Marquette, is distinctive for its hands-on learning approach. It's got some solid programs in Business, Marketing, Health Professions, Parks, and Recreation. NMU's ecology program is worth highlighting due to the surrounding natural environment of Northern Michigan. They also have an interesting "Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management" program which definitely makes use of the location.

MTU, on the other hand, is located in Houghton and is particularly lauded for its strong Engineering and Science programs. MTU graduates are known to have one of the highest starting salaries in Michigan. The programs at MTU are intense and rigorous; therefore, they might be a great choice if you are leaning toward a STEM-related field. Their Environmental Science program intersects nicely with the local ecosystem and they have substantial research opportunities.

Both universities have a lot to offer beyond academics. They provide ample opportunities for outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, and snowboarding, which you might enjoy given your love for cold weather.

Do bear in mind that these are just two of the options in Northern Michigan, and there might be additional schools that align with your specific academic and extracurricular interests. It's crucial to consider factors such as program specifics, faculty, campus ambiance, and extracurricular opportunities when making your choice.
