How important are ACT scores in college applications?

Hey guys, I'm in the process of writing college applications and I'm curious about how much weight colleges put on ACT scores. Like, can a strong score significantly boost my application or can a lower score drastically affect it negatively?

ACT scores can play a significant role in college admissions, and some colleges have specific score ranges they consider for acceptance. A robust score can enhance your candidature and show that you're academically prepared for college-level curricula, while a lower score could potentially place you at a disadvantage, depending on where you fall within the school's average range.

However, it's essential to remember that while high ACT scores are beneficial, they aren't the sole determinant of acceptance. Other factors like GPA, the rigor of high school coursework, extracurricular activities, leadership roles, community service, personal essays, letters of recommendation, and have a weight in admissions decisions. Some schools also consider the applicant's potential contributions to the school community and their potential for success after graduation.

Also, it's worth noting that a handful of schools are now "test-optional," meaning students can decide whether they want to submit their ACT or SAT scores. If the school is test-optional and you worry your lower score might negatively impact your application, you can forgo submitting it.
