Elucidate 'branch of military service’

While searching for opportunities after high school, I came across terms like Army, Navy, and Airforce, referred to as 'branches of military service'. I was hoping to get a little more clear understanding here, does that mean different divisions or something else?

The "branches of military service" refer to the different sectors of the national military, each with distinct roles, responsibilities, and areas of operation. In the United States, there are six branches of service: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

The Army is mostly a ground-based force responsible for land operations. They engage in roles such as ground warfare, defending territory, and control of occupied areas.

The Navy, on the other hand, operates in the sea. They protect our country—and our allies—at sea, maintain the freedom of the seas, deter aggression at sea, and maintain open sea lines of communication.

The Air Force is responsible for defending the country through air and space. They engage in air combat and are in charge of military satellites and information warfare.

The Marine Corps, a component of the Department of the Navy, also operates on land, much like the Army. However, their primary responsibility is to conduct amphibious warfare, which includes both land and sea operations.

The Coast Guard is unique because it has both military and law enforcement duties. They ensure the security of our nations' coasts, conduct maritime patrols, and perform search and rescue operations.

The newest branch, the Space Force, protects U.S. and allied interests in space. They monitor ballistic missile launches, track space debris, maintain satellites, and allow the other branches of the military to communicate.

Each branch is different, but their ultimate goal is the same: protecting the best interests of the nation and its citizens. As a part of the military, a person could serve in various roles spanning from defense strategists, engineers, mechanics to doctors, depending on the needs of each branch. It is also worth noting that there are further specializations within each branch.
