Thoughts on Public Universities in West Virginia

Hey guys, I'm strongly considering attending a public university in West Virginia and I'd like to hear other people's experiences or thoughts on them. Any thoughts on the education quality, the lifestyle, or the overall atmosphere on campus?

In terms of education quality, you will certainly be able to find strong programs in many traditional degrees such as business, engineering, and education. However, similar to many state schools, the strength of your education can vary by department.

Lifestyle-wise, Morgantown where West Virginia University is located, is known as a college town. The town is truly alive with school spirit especially during football season, and it always seems like there's something going on. The natural beauty in West Virginia is pretty amazing as well, with plenty of opportunities for hiking and outdoor adventures. Students who have attended Marshall University have had very positive experiences too. The education is good quality, particularly in fields like health and medical sciences due to its affiliation with a prominent health care system.

Public universities in West Virginia tend to value community service and civic engagement, so you're likely to find a culture of service and plenty of projects that give back to the community. This can be a performance booster on your college journey.

As for the lifestyle, Huntington, where the university is located, offers a blend of urban and rural experiences. There's a strong sense of community on campus, and the city itself provides a range of cultural experiences, from the arts to various community events. In terms of outdoor activities, Ritter Park is a local favorite for students who enjoy outdoor leisure. Communities in West Virginia are tight-knit and welcoming, and both West Virginia University and Marshall University have strong support systems for their students, including robust counseling services, and numerous clubs and organizations to get involved in.

One thing that could be a potential drawback is the winter, which can be harsh. But if you're comfortable with cold winters or even enjoy them, this could be a plus.

In summary, as with any school, it's important to research and visit (if possible) to get a feel for the campus environment. Consider the degree programs, student life, community engagement, and also the surrounding area of the university.
