What's the Student Experience like at Ohio State University?

Hi there! I'm considering applying to Ohio State University next year and would love to hear from current students or alumni about their experiences. Guess I'm really looking for a feel of the campus lifestyle, as well as thoughts about faculty, sports, and social scene. Thanks!

Hello! Ohio State University (OSU) has a vibrant and diverse community that offers students an enriching college experience. It's one of the largest universities in the U.S, which contributes to a diverse and enriching atmosphere.

OSU's campus has a city-feel, as it's located near downtown Columbus. This means that you're not far from the city's offerings such as shopping, dining, and entertainment. Yet OSU also boasts a beautiful tree-filled campus, giving students an easy escape from city life as needed.

Academically, OSU is highly respected with strong programs across many fields. The faculty are well-known for their dedication to teaching and many are leaders in their respective fields. Their wide-ranging knowledge offers students the advantage of a comprehensive education. The large class sizes in lower-level courses may be challenging for some, but they typically decrease as you move towards upper-level courses in your chosen major.

As for sports, OSU is part of the Big Ten Conference and has a strong athletic presence, especially in football. Football games at OSU are a major event, with students, faculty, alumni, and fans filling “The Shoe” (OSU’s enormous horse-shoe shaped stadium), especially when they play against the University of Michigan (their biggest rival). This makes for an exciting and spirited campus environment.

In terms of social life, there's a club or organization for nearly any interest at OSU. With more than 1,400 student organizations, it's easier for students to find a group that matches their passions and interests. Whether you are interested in academic clubs, cultural organizations, service groups, or sports teams, OSU likely offers it. Greek life is also an option at OSU, with approximately 12% of the student body involved in fraternities and sororities.

Remember that everyone's experiences will differ based on their interests and lifestyle preferences though. I'd recommend taking a campus tour (virtual or in-person) if possible, and definitely reach out to OSU’s admissions office to get in touch with current students who can offer a personal perspective. Best of luck with your decision!
