US Public Health Service - Is it a Military Branch?

Hello all, I've recently heard about the US Public Health Service and it seems quite interesting. Is the USPH considered a branch of the US military? If anybody could give me more information on this, I'd greatly appreciate it!

The United States Public Health Service (USPHS), specifically the Commissioned Corps within it, is one of the eight uniformed services in the United States, but it is not considered a branch of the U.S. military. The eight uniform services of the U.S. are composed of the six Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force), the Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), as well as the USPHS.

The USPHS Commissioned Corps is dedicated to delivering public health and disease prevention programs. Its officers serve in various federal agencies and departments such as the Indian Health Service, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration, and the Department of Defense, among others.

In terms of structure and ranking systems, the USPHS Commissioned Corps shares similarities with the military. Its officers might be involved in emergency responses to natural disasters or disease outbreaks and can be deployed to areas of need in the U.S. or internationally.

So to sum up, while the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is a uniformed service with a mission that can involve responding to crises and emergencies much like the military, it is not classified as a branch of the military.
